London pub games 3 games people play

September 25, 2010 6:15pm

The pull of pubs in London lies not only in its ale and food, but also in the variety of pub games that can be played. Here are some example of pub games you can play the next time you visit any of the many pubs in London with your mates!
1. Table skittles - This game is also commonly known as Hood Skittles by patrons across pubs in London. A hood or a cover made from netting can be found at the back of the table (hence the name Hood Skittles) to prevent the skittles from being thrown off the table, and all over the place! The rules are also simple: take the three cheese you are given per frame, and knock down the skittles to score points, just like you would in a normal bowling game. After all, what’s a visit to a pub if there’s isn’t any fun involved with games, right?
2. Petanque - Games in pubs in London are not conformed to indoors only. In fact one of all time favorite English pub games is the petanque, also known as Boules. Most players will tell you that it is very similar to the game of bowls but in essence it is more casual and less conformed. Two players or two teams can participate in the game whereby the individual or his team who are able to throw balls at a jack, and score the most points, will taste victory! You will most often find good players being very humble about the skills used in the game - they will let on that luck plays an important role in the game of Petanque.
3. Quoits - The sports of quoits has a very interesting origin. Did you know that it was first played at the Pentathlon Meetings in Greece more than 2000 years ago? After that, it evolved from throwing horseshoes around metal pins embedded in the ground, to a more organized sport in the 19th century where quoits became more modernized with its own set of rules and game play. Quoits is also yet another engrossing game played in pubs in London where patrons throw a ring, usually made from sturdy rope or iron rings, at iron pins fixated to bars and on to the ground. For those who visit the pubs in London for reasons other than games can play quoits outside in the beer garden underneath the moonlit skies.
